We recently had the opportunity to connect with Tammy Meckley from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security during an episode of The Workforce Wise™ Podcast. You can hear straight from the top about the benefits of E-Verify and where the program is headed in the future. In Part 1, Tammy discussed the benefits of the program for your organization and your employees.
In Part 2 of this series, we continued our discussion with Tammy and she gave us a peek into the future plans for E-Verify and I-9. Here are some of the highlights:
Tammy shares that E-Verify modernization is one of her personal priorities. Her team wants to continually improve the user experience and not be complacent about the program.
They plan to identify new features, develop the functionality, test it and deploy it quickly so it can get into the user's hands.
Data Integrity is the cornerstone of the program, so they are constantly looking for new data capabilities and data sources.
In addition, they want to make sure employers understand and are using the program properly.
E-Verify Mismatches of information (Tentative Nonconfirmation)
When an employee has a mismatch of information with E-Verify, it is a Tentative Nonconfirmation (TNC). Tammy shares that this is a huge area of focus for her team.
They want to make it easier for the employee to challenge and correct records if applicable.
In addition, they want to help ensure the employers are taking swift action to help resolve the employee’s issue.
E-Verify and Form I-9 changes
The current Form I-9 expires in October of 2022.
They will engage heavily with stakeholders about potential changes that make the process easier for employers and employees both.
A new Interface Control Agreement (ICA) will be published by the end of September, 2021 for users who access E-Verify through software like I-9 Management from Equifax.
This will extend the lookback period from 30 to 365 days to reduce duplicate cases.
Overall, Ms. Meckley wants employers and employees alike to know they are working hard every day to take friction out of the I-9 and E-Verify processes. Their goal is to get employers to sign on to the E-Verify program by making it easier and more efficient. As Ms. Meckley reiterates:
“There is no other service that allows you to take the data from the I-9, the work authorization, and identity documents, and validate it with the issuing source. This allows employers to continue to do the good work they do and not worry about whether or not the documents that were presented are legitimate documents.”
